An affiliation agreement between the Boston University School of Medicine (BUSM) and the University of Crete Medical School (UCMS) was signed between the deans of the two medical schools, Dr. Chobanian and Dr. Gourtsoyiannis respectively. The two institutions agree to the following:
• To encourage meetings between the administration, faculty, and other officers of the institutions pertinent to medical education issues
• To promote postgraduate education of UCMS physicians
• To foster the development of health programs consistent with the mission of both institutions
• To provide elective opportunities for medical students and graduate students from UCMS or BUSM at the other institution
• To develop programs for exchange of members of the Faculty of Medicine to visit and to study at BUSM or at UCMS
• UCMS will be recognized as an affiliate of BUSM
The medical school exchange program is the most active component of this agreement.
During the 2001-2010 academic years, 92 students of the University of Crete came to Boston for an elective as observers or for research, and 143 students of Boston University went to Crete for a clinical elective in geriatrics or neurology.
In the context of this agreement, faculty of the Department of Biochemistry have participated as instructors in graduate courses of the MD/PhD program of the University of Crete. In July 2006, Dr. Chobanian was invited to the medical school and gave a lecture on the new guidelines on the treatment of hypertension. In March 2006, Dr. Seldin chaired the five-member external review committee of the MD/PhD program. Two graduate students of the program are doing their PhD thesis work at BUMC laboratories.
